Description: The two existing buildings of the Athens National Gallery were designed by Greek esteemed architects P. Milonas and D. Fatouros during the 60’s. This project’s scope of works was the expansion of the Gallery, through the renovation of existing buildings and the construction of a new, underground building in the site’s free space. Positioned in central Athens, the existing buildings have been recognised as modern monuments, and their aesthetics are considered of high importance for Greek architecture. Interesting structural elements are:
- Performance Based Design for the strengthening of existing buildings
- High underground water table, resulting in critical buoyancy loads
- Structural glass floors and glass facades
- Temporary earth retaining measures (pile sheet).
Liontos & Associates conducted the complete structural design, from preliminary to tender documents and also participated in the construction stage documents.
